To Our Friends

Hanukah in Israel is a very special date.
We have eight days to stop work and study..!
We celebrate on the 25th of Kislev
So why are we celebrating Hanukah?? The reason is hundreds of years ago, we defeated the Greeks in a big, and hard battle.
It was a miracle! They were thousands against a small number of Macabees.

Hanukah is a Jewish holiday.
The Jews celebrate the holiday 8 days because jug of oil was enough for 8 days and not for one day as everyone thought.
In Israel during the Hanukah holiday there are many activities. They include beautiful song festivals, shows for adults and shows for children.
I go on Hanukah to the children’s festival and shows.
I celebrate the holiday with my big family and we light all day candles in the Hanukah Lamp.

Hanukah is a Jewish holiday. On Hanukah we kindle a Hanukah lamp, and eat potato pancakes and doughnuts because of the oil jug, when the Greeks destroyed the Temple ,they left only the candelabrum . Everyone wanted to kindle the candelabrum but there was no oil, then they found a small jug with oil. The oil in the jug lasted for 8 days. We celebrate Hanukah 8 days to remember the miracle of Hanukah.

In Israel, the people celebrate Hanukah every year on 25 of the Jewish month of Kislev.
On Hanukah, we celebrate the inauguration of the second temple.
About 2000 years ago, the Jews defeated the Greeks after they destroyed the first temple.
Then, when the Jews went to the temple they found a small jug of oil to light the candelabrum.
They said that this jug couldn’t light the candelabrum for a day, but it was sufficient for eight days, it was a miracle.
This is why we celebrate Hanukah.
On Hanukah, my family lights a Hanukah lamp, eats donuts and potato pancakes and we play with tops.
We usually celebrate with my grandfathers and grandmothers.

We celebrate Hanukah because of the miracle of the oil jar:
About 2500 years ago the Greeks came to Israel and wanted to capture Jerusalem and destroy the holy temple.
When they came in they broke all of the oil jars. The Jews needed the oil to light the candle lamp that lights the temple.

Judah the Maccabee was the leader of the Jews, Judah and his army came to the temple and found the candle lamp but there was no oil to light it!

Finally, one of Judean troops found a little jar of oil, but it was so small and the oil was not enough to last for one day!

Because of that we celebrate Hanukah for eight days

Chanukah is a Jewish holiday.
Chanukah is celebrated on the 25th of the Jewish month Kislev.
Chanukah is celebrated because many years ago the Greeks made hard life for the Jews. Antiochus, the king of Greece, decided the Jews will be like Greeks. They lived like the Greeks because they had no choice.
Part of the Jews agreed, but other part of the Jews didn’t agree. Some of them established the “Hashmonaim” organization. They fought with the Greeks for their freedom. They were a little organization, and the Greeks had a lot of fighters, but they weren’t afraid. They fought and won. The Jews received back their freedom.
This is the reason we celebrate Chanukah, eating doughnuts, lighting eight Chanukah candles and playing with tops labeled “a great miracle happened here”.

Hanukkah is an important holiday, because Hanukkah remembers the temple, the Maccabees who fought in the war and the miracle that was there- a little oil jar which was sufficient to light the candelabrum for 8 days.

On Hanukkah we are lighting Hanukkah lamps to remember the candelabrum in the temple, and we are eating food with a lot of oil, like jelly doughnuts and potato pancakes, to remember the oil jar and the miracle.

Hanukkah is a holiday that exists to remember that when the Maccabees wanted to light the Menorah, which is a seven-candled candelabra, in order to worship god because of their victory against the Greeks, they didn't have oil, and they found a small jug of oil, that in a miracle had enough oil for Eight days!
We celebrate Hanukkah by lighting a Menorah and spinning tops, that symbolize the Jewish's disguise when they learned the bible.
In those times, it wasn't allowed to learn the bible, so every time the Greeks passed over the temple, they hid the books and took out the tops to play with as long as the greeks were there.
We also eat doughnuts and Latkes ( Potato Pancakes ), to remember the oil, since these are fried with oil.

[ Menorah ]

Hanukkah it is when we remember the miracle of oil burning 8 days,
and the victory of the Maccabees over the Greeks.
